We've found that the best solution for us is to use Sorenson Squeeze to automatically encode our video and upload the compressed file into an FTP folder we've setup. One of the lesser-known features of Squeeze is the "Modify Optional Tasks" feature. Basically, you can set up a Watch Folder and set up a job, like encode to Flash SWF format. Once you've created the job you can set up an optional taks, like automatically FTPing the finished files to a server. With this set up, any videos I dump in my Watch Folder get encoded per my requirements and uploaded to my server automatically. This is cool stuff.

I really started paying attention to this as I've been setting up a new site for my trike business at UtahTrikes.com. Besides creating a local portal to the world of triking, I want to use this site as a showcase for cool video techniques. We've decided to use Flash as our primary video format because it is good quality, small file size, and the player skin gets embedded into the video file. The cool thing with that is if someone grabs the video to pay from their own site it will always play in our own branded skin. You can check out what we've done for now, but we'll be adding a lot more within the next few weeks.

Later, I'll go over the specific code of embedding a Flash object on your site and creating your own player interface.]]>

We've got a great special offer going that you don’t want to miss, as always there are further details in the newsletter.

No doubt, what you really want to know now is what's next. First, let me tell you that the team flew in from the four corners of the world and met in San Antonio the first week of May. This is where we do our heavy duty planning and strategizing for the future. The first visible result of these efforts is the LightWave v9.2 PR1 release which is currently in the hands of the Open Beta team. Canopus DVD Creator 4.5 04/18/2007 - NewTek New Plug-In Provides Feature-Film Quality 04/16/2007 - NewTek Announces LightWave® Rendition™ for Adobe® Photoshop®

Las Vegas, Nevada – NAB – April 16, 2007 -- NewTek, Inc., manufacturer of industry-leading 3D animation and video products, today announced launch plans for their latest development, LightWave Rendition for Adobe Photoshop. The product created by NewTek’s 3D division provides photorealistic 3D render output, such as recently used in the feature film ‘300’, for Adobe’s just revealed Photoshop CS3 Extended. Based upon the Emmy® Award-winning render engine native to LightWave 3D, Rendition for Adobe Photoshop gives creative artists the ability to render models imported through Photoshop CS3 and deliver the richness of detail, textures and lighting attributes found in the original 3D object format, all within the Photoshop environment.

“We’re very excited to support Adobe’s effort to bring 3D into the traditional 2D work environment,” said Jay Roth, president, NewTek 3D division. “We’re keenly aware of how prevalent 3D has become in all aspects of creative production from film to visualization to print graphics and we know how important these tools will become to Photoshop users as they explore the power that realistic 3D imagery brings to their final product.”

LightWave Rendition for Adobe Photoshop will ship with its own 3D model art library and works with models from other sources, such as Google SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse or any of these readily available common 3D interchange formats: 3DS, OBJ, U3D, KMZ, and COLLADA. LightWave Rendition allows each format to be fully rendered in high-resolution with all of their properties.

“As a fine artist and designer Photoshop is my core software application, the fact that Adobe is bringing 3D capabilities to the suite is unbelievably exciting,” said Stephen Burns, author of Advanced Photoshop CS3 Trickery & FX. “I have been integrating 3D graphics into my 2D designs for years and I know the effect a powerful, photo-real 3D render engine like LightWave Rendition for Adobe Photoshop has on the final result: it makes all the difference in the world.”

“This is an exciting time for creative artists. Moving easily from 2D to 3D in the Photoshop environment is as big a milestone as when artists progressed in the digital realm from black and white to color. Adobe has now made it possible for its passionate and creative user base to explore 3D within Photoshop CS3,” said Michael Kornet, vice president business development, NewTek. “NewTek is thrilled to bring our feature-film quality rendering to the Adobe Photoshop user’s toolset.”

Making your first Blu-Ray disks 03/15/2007 -
"I got ambitious this past week and produced my first Blu-Ray authored projects. Some of the information I have learned might be helpful to you and future clients who will probably opt for blu-ray burners in their new workstations.

First, on BD-R and BD-RE discs there are two formats currently (for prosumers) - one is called BDAV and is the simplest - does not allow for menus but does allow chapters - this can be done with Cyberlink Power Producer that comes with the Sony drive. HOWEVER - it does not allow transport stream (.m2t) or program stream (.m2p) into the program but will accept Canopus HQ-avi and do it's own encoding to blu-ray compliant files. The quality seems to be excellent and I am able to play it on standalone players including my Playstation3's.

Second, the next format is called BDMV and will allow menus and is what is produced in DVDit Pro HD. Currently these files will play in the Panasonic and Pioneer Blu-Ray players and the older Samsung players (before current firmware update) and now they should play in the Sony BDP-S1 with the recent firmware update released March 12th (hopefully Playstation 3 firmware update to allow this is not far behind). In DVDit Pro HD you again cannot use .m2t (I have over 25 files that I will now have to transcode). The software will accept program stream (.m2p) files but will transcode them. If you render your timeline out to elementary stream (.m2v) within certain parameters and get your project settings just right in Pro HD it will pass the file through and not transcode (saving a lot of time and potential quality loss). I have references to the proper Procoder 2 and Procoder Express settings:

Procoder Settings
Procoder Express Settings

It is sort of exciting that we are at the point where we can finally produce Blu-Ray videos with menus like we have been doing for years with the DVD's. I even opted for a Primera Bravo SE - CD/DVD dedicated printer and inkjet printable and waterproof Blu-Ray discs (just came out from Imation). Since the Blu-Ray players really get hot with playing of the discs the old sticky labels (with pictures/graphics) will probably not work in the long run as I can see they would easily buckle with the heat."

Thanks, Barry for the info.

Addendum: After further testing today (can't believe what you read on some of the forums) I find that BDAV format discs will NOT play in the current players from Pioneer, Panasonic and Sony. Since it played on my PS3 and computer, I assumed it would play on the other machines. Currently BDMV discs will play on the above- mentioned Blu-Ray players. I don't know if you need to add this to the Blu-Ray blog as an addendum or just leave it - your call. I had not had a chance to run out to Best Buy to test the actual BDAV disc until today (tested the BDMV disc last week).]]>

Read the Review Here.]]> DVI, HDMI and HDCP Defined 03/09/2007 - Gefen:

Digital Interface

DVI, launched in 1999, is a purely digital interface that transmits visual data from a source device to a display. With DVI, there is no digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital conversion that needs to take place before, during or after transmission. This streamlined, straightforward process makes DVI superior to other interface connectors, such as analog.

Inferior Analog

With due respect to the common analog transmission technologies (VGA, XGA, SVGA, UXGA), DVI is generally considered to be the better transmitter primarily because analog is sensitive to the phase changes of cable. Simply stated, the analog picture cannot be reproduced as accurately as the digital one, particularly at distances. The same goes for component video, another analog format that is limited to a bandwidth that transmits resolutions up to 480P. Analog cables are also generally more intolerant to environmental conditions and can add “noise” among other anomalies.

USB and FireWire

There are two other data transmission interfaces that are competing with DVI’s preferred status: IEEE 1394 FireWire and USB (universal serial bus) 2.0. Yet both of these use some form of compression. When a signal is compressed, transmitted and then uncompressed, it has more potential for difficulty than one that is sent uncompressed, like DVI. Although both FireWire and USB are often used to connect cameras and other DTV (digital television) devices, neither is the format of choice for large panel high definition displays.

DVI’s Reign

DVI emerged as the preferred connector because it’s purely digital. This means the integrity of the video signal remains true through any transmission, even long distances. You may have heard that DVI is limited to 5-meters in distance, according to the DVI 1.0 specifications. But with solid soldering techniques, using low capacitance, thicker DVI cables and fiber optic interface technologies, the distance of DVI transmission is not limited and can extend as far
as 500-meters from the source to the display.

HDCP: No More Piracy

With the advent of DVI, however, came HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), a standard "key" encoded into the DVI signal to prevent video data from being pirated. HDCP was strongly endorsed by the entertainment industry. If a source device is HDCP coded and is connected to a HDTV display or projector via DVI without the proper HDCP decoding mechanism, the picture is relegated to "snow" or in some cases, a very low (480P) resolution. In order to see HDTV with HDCP compliance, both the source and display devices must be equipped with DVI connections that can enable HDCP using "software key" decoding.

The New HDMI

Now enters HDMI (high definition multimedia interface), a new connector that bases itself on the DVI-HDCP model. HDMI with HDCP addresses the concerns of the Hollywood film community while providing consumers the ability to view high quality content on all HDTV displays and projectors. It also offers several features that make it perfectly suited for the consumer electronics market:

- supports uncompressed high definition video plus multi-channel audio in a single cable using a smaller connector that eliminates the need for multiple cables in home entertainment systems, simplifying installation and eliminating cross technology confusion.

- transmits uncompressed digital video so that the picture maintains a high quality of color depth, brightness and contrast.

- supports Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) based on the AV.link protocol so it can be controlled with a universal remote that is used with multiple HDMI sources such as DVD players or satellite set-top boxes.

- supports bi-directional communication between devices, allowing the DTV to communicate its preferred audio/video formats to the set-top box, and the set-top box to communicate what video format it is providing to the display. This enables the DTV to make intelligent decisions on how to render any given image in the format designated by the original film providers.

- supports every uncompressed standard, enhanced and high definition video format ranging from 480I to 480P, 720P, 1080I and 1080P as well as existing PAL formats.

- has the bandwidth to support compressed audio formats such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS EX and uncompressed formats (PCM audio) up to eight channels, up to 192kHz, up to 24-bits.

- supports most standard PC monitor formats, such as VGA, XGA and SXGA—all in a single HDMI cable.

- extends as far as 500-meters using proper cabling techniques. In most commercial and home theater installations, the consumer electronics components are installed in a closet or basement far from the actual displays. This makes cable length an important feature for consumers and installers.

Because of these advantages, HDMI is expected to become the standard digital interface for consumer home theater devices, computers systems
and DTVs. Already, HDMI is being featured on Silicon Image's new PanelLink Cinema chipset providing HDMI with HDCP for a high definition
content-ready solution, and consumers will likely see HDMI connectors on new electronics devices for many years to come.

The "Wow" starts now... 01/30/2007 - What to do with HDV? 01/26/2007 - RT.X100 for those only editing DV.

However in the last year multiple NLEs now edit HDV and edit it well. You can use either the Matrox RT.X2 & Adobe, or Grass Valley/Canopus Edius. Some use the Avid products Xpress Pro or Liquid to edit HDV. With this said we all know that editing HDV has not been the problem. The problem is how do we give this to the customer?

There is a solution!

Blu-Ray is a reliable, realistic solution. Many companies have desk top players out, also with the new Sony Playstation 3 that numbers of homes that can play Blu-Ray is climbing everyday. Pioneer has a burner that can be purchased for $699. Roxio just released a great authoring software for Blu-Ray authoring - DVDit Pro HD. You can get the software with the burner and 5 disks for a great price of $999.

So if you are debating about going HDV debate no more. Blu-Ray is here and this allows your customers to have finished HDV edits.]]>
The Skinny on Sound Cards 01/24/2007 - here.]]> Using Multiple Audio Interfaces 01/23/2007 - M-Audio Delta 1010 audio cards have always been one of our favorites. Besides being compatible with nearly all the audio applications available, M-audio has a very cool ASIO driver. The especially nice feature about their driver is that you can use multiple 1010 cards and they will appear as one card with all the available I/O. I took this for granted until recently as I've been working with the FireWire and USB interfaces.

My ideal setup on our test machine is to use two M-Audio FireWire 1814s and two Black Box USB interfaces for guitar and vocals. Once inside of Protools M-Powered I discovered that you can only choose one interface at a time. We verified with DigiDesign that you cannot use multiple interfaces simultaneously. Major bummer.

My favorite application for audio recording Ableton Live, which comes with all the M-Audio cards that I can think of (usually the Lite version though). I learned that it also only permits you to choose one sound card.

So after a week of trying to get it to work I finally found a really cool application for using multiple sound cards. It's called ASIO4ALL and is available for free at www.asio4all.com. This unique application appears to the system as a type of virtual ASIO sound card and internally maps all the I/O from any other sound cards connected to the machine. Inside of ASIO4ALL I can see all my audio interfaces and enable whichever I/O I need. For example, I only need one set of outputs, but I need 10 inputs. So, inside of ASIO4ALL I can disable all but the two appropriate outputs and I can enable the appropriate inputs.

Well, the good news is that when I go inside of Live I can now choose the ASIO4ALL sound driver as the audio hardware. And inside the I/O setup I now have access to all my inputs, spanning the black box and FireWire 1814. So far, so good.

Inside of Protools M-Powered I can't access any non M-Audio devices, so unfortunately I can't choose the ASIO4ALL with all the inputs.

Brent here says I should just use Cakewalk because it will work with multiple interfaces without any workarounds. We'll see. In the meantime give ASIO4ALL a shot if you are in the same situation.]]>

Compression Suite and knowing this is based on the same technology I know this product will be awesome as well.

You can read Sorenson's Press Release about Squish in our Newsflash Section

]]> How to Set Up Dual Monitors 01/10/2007 - here.

Something for Everybody 01/09/2007 -
We recently built a prototype video capturing server for a rocket testing facility. They test each rocket engine type and need to have different video data recorded and then dumped to DVD. Of course, time is of the essence, and capturing their video from tape was taking too much time. Since we already had built them an editing/authoring station we thought it would be best to build some rack mount servers that can be set up for just capturing. DV Rack was the clear solution as it allows the monitoring they need and the ability to capture to an external disk, network drive or local storage.

An Avid customer had some special requirement for his Dual Xeon Quad Core workstation. We needed three separate 1394 controller cards all on their own PCI bus. And in addition to that we needed 15 USB ports without using a hub. The complication here is that we also were using a Quadro 4500 video card which takes up two card spaces. And did I mention the RAID 5 controller? We were able to get our hands on some very cool combo cards that gave us all the ports we needed.

I especially like building machines that have crazy storage requirements. With hard drive capacities so high now, the DV or even HDV editor seldom needs more than a 4-drive RAID to accomodate all his footage. The Uncompressed editor, especially one dealing with Uncompressed HD, will need a lot more storage than that. We recently built an Axio machine for a film house that needed as much storage as we could get them internally. We were able to cram 12TB of RAID0 storage into the machine using 16 750GB drives. We used two 750GB power supplies ganged together and managed to fit it all in our standard CM-Stacker.

Some of the funnest machines we build are the Canoptrox multi-NLE setups. We used to build them more often and it was trickier to get both the Matrox and Canopus hardware to work within a single version of Premiere. Nowadays, they coexist together easier each with their own software NLE applications. Now it is more of a trick just getting the right combination of slots on the motherboard to work all the cards. Why would you want more than one NLE? Because there still doesn't exist one that does it all.

People have different needs in their NLE and that's why we have so many option in our workstation configurators. If you have some special considerations that can't be met with our drop downs, just contact us and we'll set you up custom style.]]>
"Broadcast Yourself" on the internet with streaming video 01/08/2007 - And the part that interested me as a videographer is that they both let you host your own videos for free. They convert your video into streaming video, and then give you the html code to stream it from other websites. That, for me, is a great way to get my work out there on the Internet and into the hands of the public. Because, lets face it, the Internet is being used more and more by the average person. And as far as advertising goes, it has ways of being far cheaper than television, radio or magazine. And if someone like the Star Wars Kid or the Numa Numa guy can become worldwide Internet celebrities overnight, so can the talented individuals like you and me who work hard to deliver products that achieve a higher quality of entertainment.
I am glad that the Internet allows those who really deserve fame to get it, like one of my favorite bands “Ok Go”. I remember them from back in the day before they danced in their backyard or played in a room full of treadmills. But now, with their witty videos and catchy tunes, they have achieved a new group of fans they would not have been able to get without their Internet popularity. And when your grandmother, who thinks rock music is the devil, sends you a link to their new Internet rock video because it made her smile… then you know they’ve achieved what all of us want. We all want our product to be recognized and enjoyed by the masses worldwide. So get on the ball. Broadcast yourself. Show everyone who you are and what you do. The world is tuning in to watch. Give ‘em something worth checking out.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!! 12/25/2006 -

Well, it is Christmas Day and all the presents have been opened and all of the wrapping paper has been moved out to the trash.

We just finished Christmas dinner with family and we are all sitting on the couch watching a movie.

We just moved into our new home Thursday so we didn’t have a lot of time for shopping but when I got out there it was killer time. All of the sales were pretty much done and I was paying the price for all of the things I was purchasing.

I had to do it all in a day and it was running around like crazy having heart attacks every time the cashier told me how much my purchases came to.

I know how the Holidays can get really crazy and I know how out of control they can become.

Last year I did all my shopping on the Internet and I really liked it. I wish I would have remembered this year early enough.

What I love about internet shopping is the fact I can find what I want in many different places and compare the prices. I can look a several reliable shops and get what I need and feel confident that I am getting the best price.

Now that Christmas is here you will see many great deals on stock that needs to be moved. As a matter of fact I just watched two adds and another is playing about how all the major stores are 50% to 75% tomorrow and I bet if you keep your eyes open here you might find some cool stuff at a great price also.

I hope that 2007 is going to be a great one for you!! May all of you be more successful this year than ever before and may all of you wishes and desires come true!!

I would also like to thank everyone that has been helpful to others this year. Sharing one’s talents so that others can become better is a wonderful thing in deed!!

Change Sucks 12/08/2006 -
The only thing worse than change? change in the work place. When it effects your ability to make a living change is not only a hard pill to swallow but can also cause an amount of stress that

I travel to all of these TV Stations and I am the first guy that most of the station’s employees are seeing. I stand in the front of a room telling them that their world is about to change drastically. Some of them are excited but many of them are very scared because for many it is either learn this or find another job. I can’t tell you how much I love having that responsibility!!

Now, with all of that said there is another side of the coin. Even though we are resistant to change and will sometimes fight it, we might be fighting something that is going to make our lives much easier.

For instance… My Father didn’t feel like he needed, nor did he want a cell phone. He just couldn’t see the benefit from it and it didn’t matter any way because he was NOT going to change. When it was pointed out to him that when Mom was alone on the road it would give him piece of mind because she could call him in a time of trouble he decided to try it.

Now that he can call Mom from the store to ask questions, now that he can call anyone he needs to talk to WHEN he needs them and not after he gets home he is hooked and can’t live without it.

Another example, When Edius first came out I fought it. I had the first Alpha copy in the US and when I first started to try it I said forget it! I was a StormEdit user and I was quite happy. All I wanted was two more video and 2 more audio tracks and I would have been fine.

I got Edius, installed it and hated it. I could use it as easily and it looked completely different. I was fumbling around and eventually got it to look like StormEdit and I tried to use it as StormEdit. The first letter I wrote back to my friend Alex in Japan was “This is all wrong… you guys can’t do this!!”

I think it was about the third or fourth report that I said “Never mind”.

My Daughter needed to finish a wedding she had shot and she brought over a hard drive so we could hook it up. I have one old computer with a Storm and StormEdit on it. As I was helping her I found myself becoming very frustrated because I could easily do the things I was used to doing!!!! I realized right there that if I was being told that I had to switch to this program that I used to love so much that I would have HATED it!!

By the time I leave these TV Stations most of the employees are excited about the change because they have gotten a taste of what the other side is like.

I guess where I am going with this is that you should not be afraid of change. I hear folks all of the time saying “I have this computer from 10 years ago and it does all that I need”. Well, this is the same statement that the Station employees make about the editing with the equipment they have.

My question is “How do you know it is doing all that you need?”

When these folks play with and use the technology that is coming at them fear melts away and excitement takes over in most cases, just as it did with me when I first changed over to Edius years ago.

Get the demo, watch the tutorials on the Canopus Site and then give a real try. You might find that it will work for you better than you ever imagined!

Some cool stuff 12/05/2006 -
I was sitting in a meeting with the editors and Photogs... er uh... Photo Journalist (Sorry about that) and they were asking me a lot of questions and there were some that I didn't have the answers for right away, why? because there are no answers as of yet because nobody has ever tried doing what they are doing!! I had to develop some answers to thier questions while I was there.

These guys have eight editing stations that they capture, edit and output thier work all on servers. Eight computers can capture HD to a server at the same time, all of them can edit from the server at the same time and all can ouput to the server at the same time. It is incredible to watch!

Now... do they have problems? Sure they do... why do you think I was there, but they are getting the kinks ironed out and they are really rocking!

BitCentral, the company that installed all of this, is doing some wonderful things in the broadcast industry. John King, the head engineer, is a pure wizard and is creating magic wherever he goes. I have trainined dozens of stations for them and I am always in amazment at what all of this stuff does!

What is at the heart of all this? Edius. Canopus Edius is the editing software ( and Canopus Hardware) these stations are using. Why Edius and not other editing software? There a few reasons.

1. Ease of use - In the training I have done I have had 0 people tell me it is more difficult to use then the other NLE's on this level they have used.

2. Versitality - The amount of formats it can place on the timeline without conversion and edit in realtime.

3. Realtime - There is nothing on the market that can touch it!! The things that can be done with the software alone on a laptop blows the mind!! :)

Grass Valley comes along and spends MILLIONS just to buy the company and make the software their own.

If you have not looked at Edius you might want to. There are many reasons why it is the choice of so many!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!! 11/23/2006 -
In this wonderful world of video there are many things I am thankful for... The friends I have created over the years is top on the list but there is alot more to be thankful for.

I am very thankful to be living during a time where so many amazing things are happening. I remember playing indoor soccer when I was younger and I bought a video from a guy that recorded one of the games. I took it home and watched and I was hooked! The fact that I could watch this game over and over anytime I wanted was wonderful!!

I was hooked! It would take years for me to get into the Video Biz but I was hooked.

We have come along way from the Video Cameras that had to have a record unit hooked to it that we wore on our shoulder, the tools we have at our finger tips are absolutely amazing when compared with just a few short years ago!

One of those tools is back grounds that have already been created for us. There are several companies out there that can help make our productions look more professional without us having to create our own graphics.

I have NO artistic ability whatsoever. If I had to create any graphics on my own it would look horrible! Luckily I have friends like Tim Johnson that is an award winning graphic artist that would create things for me when I really needed them.

Now I have a huge amount of choices just by shopping for what I want. When I need something I just shop and buy!

Check out some of the products here and see if somebody can save you!!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone… I hope yours is a wonderful day!

Eight-Core Workstations Are Here! 11/08/2006 -
You can view our revised workstation configurators here: http://www.guygraphics.com/showmequad%20core.html

To make it easier to judge the relative performance of the CPUs we have started to include a "Total GHz" notation next to each CPU offering. To calculate this we take the CPU clock speed and multiply it by the total number of cores. For example, the new 5355 Quad-Core Xeons get a total of 21.28GHz (2.66x8), while the 5160 Dual-Core Xeons get a total of 12GHz (3GHx x 4). Note that some applications and tasks will take better advantage of having 8-cores in the machine, while other applications and tasks might benefit more from a faster clock speed and fewer cores. As more software developing companies rewrite their software for multiple cores we will continue to see better performance. ]]>
