The Beauty of HDMI

HD quality sound; HD quality video. All brought to bloom at it’s fullest through the beauty of HDMI. One of the newest HD connections on the market, HDMI (which stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a single cable that transmits uncompressed HD all-digital video and audio to your High Definition TV or monitor. HDMI has increased in popularity and is being used on TV’s, Cameras, AV output boxes, satellite set-top boxes and DVD Players. It is considered the best quality for both Audio and Video when compared to any other video interfacing option.

HDMI supports uncompressed high definition video and multi-channel audio in a single cable using a smaller connector than most video/audio connectors. This means you only need one cable for your home entertainment system, making your connections much simpler. It transmits an uncompressed digital video signal so that the picture has the highest quality of color range, brightness and contrast.

Since HDMI has bi-directional communication between devices, your player can communicate with your HDTV telling it which uncompressed format to best display your video in. HDMI currently supports every uncompressed standard, enhanced and high definition video format ranging from 480I to 480P, 720P, 1080I and 1080P as well as existing PAL formats. It also is configured to support compressed audio formats such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS EX and uncompressed formats, like PCM audio, up to eight channels (192 kHz / 24-bits). There are also many HDMI adapters that support standard PC monitor formats such as VGA or DVI. In summary, HDMI currently supports any Video or Audio format, whether uncompressed or compressed.

With all these advantages, HDMI is quickly becoming the standard digital Audio/Video interface for HDTV’s and Home Entertainment Systems.

So, now that you’ve got the specs of HDMI is it worth the cost? I think it is. Analog video has been dying a slow death while Digital Video Saturates the Market. And High Definition has been the main buzz word for years now. And with the sale of flat panel TV’s increasing, HD has been introduced into homes all over the world. With the shift into the digital world, you’ll be finding yourself shifting too. And if you’re going HD, you might as well go HDMI and get the best quality. And when it comes to HD, HDMI isn’t that much more than the cost of component cables and audio cables. And it’s certainly more simplistic.

With HDV Cameras like the Sony HCR-HC5 or an HDMI Video Capture Card like the HDMI Intensity Card from Blackmagic Design, you can now record your life in full HD resolution. As far as the specs for HD go HDMI’s quality is best, followed up by DVI, and then component. Some forums say this is disputable because they feel factors like what TV or Player you’re using effect the quality leaving some options looking “better” in opinion. This is sort of like how mosaic art sometimes looks “better” from really far away or if you blur your vision, taking the harsh blocks and making them appear smoother. Either way, the actual quality of HDMI is always numerically better than DVI and DVI is always better in quality than component. Just like in Standard Definition S-Video is better than RCA.

So if you want the best HD quality on the market, your only option is to go HDMI. And with HDMI being so popular, it’s an easy switch to make. You can get an HDMI surround sound system with an HDMI receiver, an HDMI HDTV and an HDMI DVD player. You’re set! And not only will the quality look pristine, but you’re now only dealing with 3 cables. When it comes to HD, HDMI is the logical choice.
